At What Cost?

Immersion is a state of deep mental involvement in which the individual may experience disassociation from the awareness of the physical world due to a shift in their attentional state. Augmented Reality (AR) Image Target tracking allows us to use AR to detect a specific image and activate a digital asset in response. It allows artists to extend, subvert, or expand on the original material by adding different layers of meaning. The aim of this project is to use this technique to express an alternative narrative to those portrayed in the media.

β€˜At What Cost’ prompts the audience to view an ulterior perspective of what is portrayed in the news articles. Each article represents an environmental and social issue that is overlooked by economic gain. My image target designs aim to demonstrate the β€˜cost’ of these economic profits.

Applications used: Unity, Vuforia, Adobe Premiere Pro

The stamp font stating β€œAt What Cost?” was designed to imprint itself on the page, prompting the viewer to reflect on the alternative narrative as an edited version.

The animation of the man crying was created on Adobe Animate, where I manipulated each frame to create the forward-leaning crying motion.

Adobe Premiere Pro was utilised to remove the backgrounds of both the man animation and the smoke video. A transparent background was vital for layering the asset in Unity.
